An accreditation commission is like a "watchman on the wall." The main purpose of accreditation is quality assurance. It assures the student that he/she will receive good quality material, grades and records of the courses taken, and a certificate, diploma, or degree upon completion of the program in which they are enrolled. Every accreditation group is not the same. There are different accrediting groups, focused in different areas of accreditation.
